Dad’s Simple Sausage Rolls

Elsie’s Rating: “SUASAGES!”

Sausage rolls are one of those rare foods that toddlers, adults, and anyone within smelling distance will happily eat. These are quick, simple, and require very little effort — which is exactly the kind of cooking most parents have time for.

Crispy pastry, tasty sausage filling, and minimal preparation make these perfect for lunch, snacks, or the classic toddler dinner when everything else has been rejected.

Ingredients

4 sausages

1 sheet of Ready-Rolled Puff Pastry

1–2 tablespoons apple sauce, chutney, sauce of choice

1 egg, beaten (for brushing the pastry)

Optional: sesame seeds for the top

Calories: ≈ 400 per sausage roll (Dependent on sausages used)

Method

Step 1 – Give the sausages a head start
Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan).

Place the sausages on a baking tray and cook them for about 10-15 minutes, this depends on how long your sausages take to cook. You’re not fully cooking them yet — just giving them a head start so they’re easier to work with and cook properly later.

Once done, take them out and let them cool slightly so you can handle them without performing emergency finger cooling under the tap.

Step 2 – Prepare the pastry
Roll out your puff pastry on a lightly floured surface until it’s roughly a big rectangle (precision isn’t essential here).

Spread a thin layer of apple sauce, chutney or any sauce you fancy down the middle of each strip. Leave a small gap around the edges so the filling doesn’t try to escape later.

Step 3 – The sausage roll assembly line
Place the part-cooked sausages along the middle of the pastry strips.

Brush the pastry edges with beaten egg, then fold the pastry over the sausages and roll it closed so the sausage is fully wrapped.

Press the edge together with a fork to seal it. This also makes it look like you know what you're doing.

Trim the pastry to make 4 sealed sausage rolls.

Step 4 – Cut and chill
Cut the rolls into small sausage roll pieces (about 5cm) and place them on a lined baking tray. (but honestly, cut them to whatever size you like)

If you have time, pop them in the fridge for 15–20 minutes so the pastry firms up.nIf you don’t have time, that’s also fine. Parenting is busy.

Step 5 – Bake
Brush the tops with the rest of the beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds if you want to be fancy.

Bake for 20–25 minutes until the pastry is golden, crispy, and smells amazing.

Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

Dad’s Tips ✔️

Use Whatever Sausages Exist
Use whatever sausages you already have in the fridge. Toddlers rarely appreciate premium ingredients anyway.

Small Food = Safer Food
Cut the sausage rolls into smaller pieces. For some reason, toddlers trust small food more than large food.

Make More Than You Think You Need
Even people who say they’re “not hungry” will suddenly appear once sausage rolls come out of the oven.
